Havening®
my technique to tame your emotions
Overcoming difficultés emotional difficulties and increasing resilience
Havening® (neuroscience‑based emotional release) is a powerful method designed to eradicate the consequences of traumatic or stressful events. It works directly on the brain to de‑traumatize memory and remove its negative effects, both on the psyche and on the body. Close to EMDR, the results of Havening® are long‑lasting. Since its development in 2001, this touch‑ and delta‑wave‑based therapeutic approach has gained popularity worldwide.
“Havening® uses our biological system to heal, strengthen and optimize our mind and body.” — Dr Ronald A. Ruden, originator of Havening.
What is Havening®?
A psychosensory approach based on touch and delta waves
Havening® techniques are part of psychosensory therapies. They use touch to influence thoughts, mood and behavior by generating delta waves in the brain. This touch induces a deep relaxation response similar to meditation or relaxation, reducing stress in body and mind. At the same time, I guide the client through traumatic memories or thoughts using visualization and reflection processes. The goal is to activate a specific memory while in deep relaxation, to re‑process and re‑encode it in a less traumatic way. By changing the brain’s biological structure to lessen symptoms, Havening® results prove durable.

- The intervention process is simple, effective, safe and pleasant to receive. Results can be remarkably rapid and endure over time, making Havening® an amazing, powerful tool while remaining very gentle and respectful.
- It is used to increase and cultivate resilience, foster well‑being, boost creativity and performance, dissipate stress and other disruptive emotions or reduce post‑traumatic stress.
- Like EMDR, EFT and Brainspotting, it is one of the therapeutic tools and can be combined with spoken approaches such as coaching or Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT).
An innovative approach in France
Currently, only about ten therapists in France are authorized to practice Havening®.
This newness and its proven effectiveness for over twenty years are drawing increasing interest from mental‑health professionals in France.

Your frequently asked questions
What are Havening techniques?
What types of problems do Havening techniques address?
The physical and psychological consequences of traumatic encoding and stressful life events may include phobias, chronic pain, anger, fear of abandonment, grief, cravings, PTSD, panic attacks, “emotional eating,” distressing memories (broken relationships, shocking news, losses, embarrassment, etc.), and trauma experienced by victims of natural disasters (hurricanes, floods, etc.) or dramatic events (war, fire, assault).
Are the results of a Havening session permanent?
Although Havening® is a relatively new healing approach and hasn’t yet been extensively researched, experience shows that after successful application the results appear permanent in 90 % of cases. This is because the techniques are designed to change the brain’s biological structure. Occasional symptom return suggests either that the traumatic core hasn’t yet been found or that the problem was encoded differently. At present, addictive and obsessive‑compulsive behaviors, certain pain syndromes and vagal discomfort often need reinforcement or cannot be treated.
How long does it take for Havening to take effect?
After the first Havening® session, clients report a general improvement in their symptoms and/or work performance. These benefits appear to continue for up to two months after the session.
Are Havening techniques a form of hypnosis?
No. Havening® techniques do not involve a hypnotic trance. The client remains fully aware of their feelings, thoughts and environment and fully participates in the process.
How do Havening techniques work exactly?
The consequences of traumas and stressful life events are stored in the brain and are activated by conscious recall. Once this happens, symptoms appear. This activation also makes the pathway that generates these feelings susceptible to disruption. Havening® techniques are designed to disrupt this pathway through a process called synaptic depotentiation—literally like dimming a room by unplugging a lit lamp. While no guarantee can be given, emotions and sometimes even the ability to recall the memory can be extinguished after performing the Havening® techniques.
How are Havening techniques different from TFT, EFT and EMDR?
Although these approaches are similar, Havening appears to produce a quicker response and cause less distress for the client than TFT, EFT and EMDR. This is believed to come from a thorough understanding of the underlying neurobiology of the Havening techniques. Additionally, Havening includes different modalities that speed healing. In short, Havening was designed as a powerful, biological healing method. EFT and TFT are innovative therapy, coaching and self‑help techniques based on energy and rooted in the emerging field of energy psychology. Energy psychology methods aim to assess where the body’s energies are blocked or out of harmony and then to correct and balance the flow of these energies, aligning the body’s natural energies. They use the ancient Chinese meridian system with gentle tapping on designated points on the face and body while stating specific phrases and focusing on emotionally intense issues to release the intensity and reframe the problems.
